A Life on the Road | Leaving comfort behind for a life of exploring and discovering

If you had met me a few years ago, I would have told you that having a secure, stable job, a home, and a routine were the most important things in life. I’ve grown since then. I’ve gone down that path and I’ve realized that following a structure like that only led me to being unhappy. I was secure and safe, yes. I was able to pay my bills and I always had food to eat and a roof over my head. But after I got it all, I found that I was still lacking something – true happiness and freedom.

After all my searching, I was still lost.

I thought that once I got that job, furnished that home, and found that person – I would be happy and complete. I thought that’s what life was supposed to be. But I was wrong.

I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to love and be loved – but I came to realize that as long as I neglected myself, I would never find true happiness.

So, I left everything I knew. I came back to Hawaii, a place I find comfort in. For the last 8 months, I’ve been working on myself every single day. I’ve been focusing on my heart, mind, soul, and body. I’m happy. I’m strong. I’m confident. Months ago, I was a wreck, I was unsure, I felt hopeless and lost. Now, when I think of my past, I don’t shatter into a million pieces – I am able to realize the growth and the lessons, and I give thanks to my past.

I figured life out (I think)

After the last few months – painful heartache, a nuclear missile threat, volcano eruptions, and many other life changes – I’ve realized what is important to me. (Yes, it took alllll of that for me to come to my grand realization)

Life is not about getting the structure and stability that comes with a job, house and security. Don’t get me wrong, those things are nice and a necessity to a certain extent – but they are not what life is all about! (at least, not to me anyway).

Here is an equation that has helped me make my decision to live life on the road:

Life = Short

Earth = Big

What does that leave me with? Obviously, traveling as much as I can right now to see as much as I can and experience everything while I still can.

So that’s what I’m doing.

A life on the road | How, where, when

There is way too much to see in this life to be stuck behind a desk. This world is waiting for me to embrace it, so embrace it I will!

Later this week, I will be flying to the east coast, and that’s where my adventure will begin.

I’ll be visiting every US state, every National Park, roadside attraction and of course… the UFOs!

There’s no end destination or date, I’ll just be traveling around as long as I please or until I’ve found a place I’ve fallen in love with enough to settle down (whichever comes first!)

I’m excited for this, I’m excited to see a new place every day, experience something new, breathe in new surroundings, meet new people, and become fully engulfed in discovering more and more of myself.

I hope you come along for the ride ❤

  1. Great read! I remember chasing the so-called “career,” and in the great rat race. I wasn’t happy or content even with what I have because I knew deep inside my soul isn’t growing. Looking forward to reading more of your travels along the way!

    • Thank you Paolo! It’s funny because I used to think joining the “rat race” was everything I wanted out of life! I couldn’t have been more wrong. I’m looking forward to my new adventure, and I look forward to hearing about yours as well! 🙂

  2. I agree with you. It doesn’t make sense to me to have a life which entails just living to work. Life is too short to be stuck behind a desk. I too am preparing to expand my wings and travel the world. Many blessings to you.

    I cannot wait to see all of the adventures you’re going to take, the place and people you are going to meet. Take everything in, you’re going to see the beauty of God everywhere you go. I pray for safe travels and I cannot wait to check in (on the blog, social, text) to see how you are doing. YAY, for new adventures!!!!

  4. Best of adventures! I did the travel and live all over the world for a while lifestyle. I found my happiness later in a relationship with our Maker Jesus and a stable home life. Everything else was exciting and beautiful and just screamed Him to me. So enjoy your adventure and may you love Him more through it.😄❤

  5. Ohhhh, I would love to do this!! And your pics are so lovely and make me want to just join you. There is so much out there! Planning a road trip with two friends next summer and looking forward to some adventures this year as well!
    I am totally a plan-it-all-out person, but I am slowly learning that it is good to just let some stuff just happen because when I over-plan, I destroy the beautiful spontaneous.

    • Thank you so much, Greta! I’m totally with you on having to have a set plan, I get anxious if everything isn’t laid out and set in stone. BUT, I am learning that life is so much better if you just go with the flow, so that is what I’m trying to do every day – and I’m much happier and freer for it! 🙂

      • I think you’ve stumbled across the truth of it here ladies. To begin with, it may be difficult for us to embrace the idea of relinquishing control of our lives, but only when we do so can we start to align ourselves with our path.

        The difficulty of it is, in fact, the first test. If it is too difficult to overcome, then we are not yet ready for what comes after, but if we can learn to trust in our instinctive heart, we move ever closer to that feeling of being in the right place at the right time.

        And we must nurture a relationship with adaptability; to move without a plan is not, as we may fear, to move blindfold, rather it is to move with instinct and flexibility, and with the assurance that whatever will be, will be.

        I look forward to following your journey and development!

  6. I think you’re right about seeing things for as long as you like. I retired and a few people told me I had earned some stability and rest after all those years of doing IT. I should just sit still perhaps, drink coffee, and watch life’s parade pass me completely by. Somehow this was the reward of retirement. Instead, I gave everything away or donated it, bought one way tickets first to Japan and then Vietnam and hit the road. I did not own that much. No house, furniture, etc. Also no debt by the time I was done and money both in the bank and social security retirement. Not enough to do a thing in the states but I am not living in the states now. Currently I am on my last few weeks in Hanoi and then on to Ho Chi Minh City but with a stop first in Hong Kong. I think you are doing the right thing. I’ve learnee also that the destination really does not matter. Its what gets you there that does.

    • I love your outlook on life! I am so happy I’m seeing early on that material objects and possessions aren’t nearly as important as they are made out to be. Life is all about experiences and loving and enjoying life for what it is. I hope you enjoy your travels, can’t wait to see where you go next! 🙂

    • I’m just finishing up with three months in Hanoi. I love the city! So much to see, do, and the food! I’ve been able to walk the city every day, take photographs and also travel in north and central Vietnam. Off tomorrow to Hue and have been to Halong Bay and Hoi An. I leave for Ho Chi Minh City on 14 June to spend a few months there. Then will cross over to Cambodia for a year or so.

  10. I love road trips. I need to blog more on this topic. Last year on one of my cross country drives I hit the UFO areas in New Mexico, as well as the truly awesome national parks such as White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns. You will have a blast. There is so much to see here.

  11. In 2001 at age 52, I took a 70 day, 7000 mile car camping trip across the US and Canada. I was at the beginning of menopause and wrote 88 journal pages filled with both whining and revelation. I am a new blogger and have decided I am going to tell about that trip, day by day, starting in the end of June since I was a teacher at the time and the trip started the day after school ended. I haven’t quite got a title yet. A Menopause Odyssey? THE Change? I am older now, of course, and came out of the process pretty well. I will probably postscripts everyday to tell about the trip through my now older eyes. Your blog and life inspire me. Keep up the good work. Keep traveling. I am!
